PETER CASE BIO
This stop in Leeds, featuring Peter Case and Sid Griffin, showcases two legends of Americana and roots music.
With Peter Caseβs Grammy-nominated songwriting and groundbreaking work in bands like The Plimsouls and The Nerves, and Sid Griffinβs trailblazing Americana legacy with The Long Ryders, audiences will be treated to an evening of raw, soulful performances steeped in tradition and innovation.
Donβt miss this rare chance to see two master storytellers share the stage!
Headliner Peter Case is known for his work in The Nerves, an American power pop trio formed in 1974 and based in Los Angeles. Their EP in 1976, featured their song "Hanging on the Telephone," later a hit single covered by Blondie on the album Parallel Lines.
Then in 1983 Peter Case wrote the hit song "A Million Miles Away". The song became a Billboard Hot 100 chart hit with his band The Plimsouls. One of the great L.A. bands of the early β80s. "A Million Miles Away" is now a power-pop anthem that was featured as a killer soundtrack in the 1983 cult favorite film Valley Girl. Case has since been quoted as βa master of Beatlesque power-pop in his role as the frontman of the Plimsoulsβ
The Nerves and The Plimsouls helped define the LA punk and alternative rock scenes, and Caseβs later solo work helped usher in the Americana music phenomenon. On going solo/acoustic Case recorded on Geffen Records under the imprimatur of producer T Bone Burnett. For the last decades Case has worked as a singer-songwriter, building a lauded catalogue of songs and a reputation as a musicianβs musician. Springsteen, Steve Earle, Ben Harper, Loudon Wainwright III and Ely are fans. Sir George Martin tapped him to play Beatles songs at the Hollywood Bowl. The Grammy-nominated musician has also written and recorded with such roots heroes as John Prine, John Hiatt, T-Bone Burnett, Richard Thompson and members of Los Lobos.
Case also has a worldwide following and is known for his well-loved songs "Entella Hotel" and "Travellin' Light" among many others.
Spring 1973 in San Francisco I became a street musician, playing solo and busking with different players, including blues and rock βnβ roll hero, Mike Wilhelm of the Charlatans, and folk guitarist Tom Hobson. I was the main subject of a film that year, Night Shift, about SF street music, directed by Bert Deivert.
The legendary folk-rocker and bohemian hero Peter Case documented his trailblazing life in a full-length memoir telling Caseβs story is βAs Far As You Can Get Without a Passportβ, published in 2006, which tells the story of a street-singing trip by Case from Northern California to Mexico.
In 1977 The Nerves relocated to Los Angeles and began performing and promoting LAβs first punk rock shows. Playing their own brand of stripped-down, driving, melodic teenage rockβnβroll, touring with The Ramones, and sharing bills with Devo, Pere Ubu, and Mink DeVille. During the first wave of American punk, The Nerves returned to LA to perform at the newly opened Masque. In early 1978, after playing one final show at the Whisky a Go Go, The Nerves broke up to pursue different directions.
Later that year Case wrote songs, and put together The Plimsouls. In 1979 he picked up where The Nerves left off adding maximum R&B and folk rock influences to the mix. Once The Plimsouls made their Hollywood debut they immediately attracted a following. A recording contract followed with the Planet/Elektra label. The independent single, βA Million Miles Awayβ became the bandβs biggest hit: a national college radio smash and international power pop/garage band classic. The Everywhere At Once album was then released by Geffen Records in early 1983. But the band broke up in 1985.
Peter Case then began to rediscover his roots as a musician. He moved to Fort Worth in Texas and finished writing the Peter Case album recorded with T Bone Burnett. The album was finished in LA with Jerry Marotta, Van Dyke Parks, Roger McGuinn and others at Sunset Sound. The album had a big impact on musicians and listeners around the country. It became the opening salvo of a new singer-songwriter movement that would become known as Americana. Peter Case was the first songwriter of his generation of musicians to turn from rock toward an acoustic sound. New York Times critic Robert Palmer called it the best album of 1986 and it got a five-star review in Rolling Stone. Case toured extensively in the US with Jackson Browne and throughout Europe with a band, and received a Grammy nomination for the song βOld Blue Car.β
The next album, 1989βs The Man With The Blue Postmodern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar, was self-produced with Steven Soles & Larry Hirsch. A collaboration with a number of great musicians including Jim Keltner, Ry Cooder and David Hildago.
Caseβs tribute to one of his blues heroes titled Avalon Blues: The Music of Mississippi John Hurt was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Folk Album category in 2001. Many performances from this period of time were captured by the filmmaker Tom Weber, for his full length documentary Troubador Blues.
In 2007, Case received the Grammy nomination in the Best Traditional Folk category for the album Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, produced by Ian Brennan.
A 2023 documentary about the one-time frontman of L.A.'s Plimsouls traces Caseβs journey from street busker to putative rock star titled βPeter Case: A Million Miles Awayβ.
